Tawakkaltu Alallah

Tawakkaltu Alallah means I have put my trust in Allah. It is a beautiful Islamic phrase that shows a believer’s heart is relying on Allah after doing what they can. It does not mean sitting back and doing nothing. Rather, it means making effort, taking the right steps, and then trusting Allah with the result.

The phrase comes from the idea of tawakkul, which means relying upon Allah with faith, hope, and patience. A Muslim says Tawakkaltu Alallah when they want to remind themselves that Allah is in control, and that the final outcome belongs to Him.

Tawakkaltu Alallah is pronounced as Ta-wak-kal-tu A-la-Allah.

Ta sounds like the beginning of “tub”.
wak sounds like “wak” with a clear short vowel.
kal sounds like “kul”, but keep the sound light.
tu sounds like “too”, but shorter.
A-la means “upon”.
Allah should be said with respect and care.

A smooth way to say it is: Ta-wak-kal-tu a-la-Allah. Non-Arabic speakers should try not to rush the phrase. Say it slowly first, then connect the words naturally.

Muslims say Tawakkaltu Alallah when they want to place their trust in Allah before doing something, during a difficult moment, or after making a sincere effort. It is often said when leaving the house, starting an important task, making a decision, or facing uncertainty.

• When leaving home: A Muslim may say, “Bismillah, Tawakkaltu Alallah,” meaning they begin in Allah’s name and trust Him for protection and guidance.
• Before exams or work: After studying or preparing well, a person may say, “Tawakkaltu Alallah,” and enter with a calm heart.
• Before travel: A person may say it before starting a journey, trusting Allah for safety.
• During stress or fear: When things feel uncertain, saying Tawakkaltu Alallah helps the heart remember that Allah is the best disposer of affairs.
• After making effort: A believer plans, works, asks for advice, prays, and then says Tawakkaltu Alallah, trusting Allah’s wisdom.

Real tawakkul is a balance. We use the means Allah has given us, and we trust Him with what we cannot control.

The meaning of Tawakkaltu Alallah is deeply rooted in the Quran and Sunnah. The Quran often teaches believers to rely upon Allah, especially after making the right effort.

In Surah Hud, Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, said: “Indeed, I have relied upon Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” The Arabic includes the phrase إِنِّي تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى ٱللّٰهِ. Reference: Quran 11:56.

Allah also says: “And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him.” Reference: Quran 65:3.

In another verse, Allah says: “And upon Allah let the believers rely.” Reference: Quran 3:160.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught a dua for leaving the house: “Bismillahi, tawakkaltu alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.” It means: “In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah.” Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 5095 and Jami at-Tirmidhi 3426.

This shows that Tawakkaltu Alallah is not just a phrase. It is a way of living with faith, effort, patience, and trust in Allah.

Tawakkaltu Alallah may be written in different ways in English because Arabic sounds can be spelled in more than one way. Common spellings include Tawakkaltu Alallah, Tawakkaltu Ala Allah, Tawakkaltu Alallah, and Tawakkaltu ala Allah. They all point to the same meaning: I have put my trust in Allah.
